Our pet’s lifespan is much shorter than ours and consequently they age much faster than we do.  It starts out at a 10 to 1 ratio for the first year and transitions to a 5 to 1 ratio in their geriatric years.  An annual comprehensive physical exam is equivalent to once every 7 years for pets.  Much can change in this time period. 

Through the physical exam and lab tests early detection is possible.  There are many diseases like kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease and glaucoma that when identified early are treatable and often times curable.

During your pet’s exam, the doctor will review their diet, weight history, and environmental factors such as:  your pet’s contact with or exposure to other pets and wildlife,

After seven years, when your loved one is in their geriatric stage, a comprehensive physical exam should be done every 6 months.
